It’s really not all that complicated. You shop nearly a small bit for an insurance agent. They do all the leg work and will probably recommend an LLC. That is a Limited Liability Company. It basically means that if someone decides to sue you, they can only come after your company for money but not your personal assets. We live in a sue pleased society, I personally would not want to be without insurance.

do you need insurance? that’s a personal scale, but I sure do. RLI insurance covers soap and it is the nominal amount expensive (doesn’t take in candles, and only available to companies with less than $5000 in sales).
besides, should you choose to do a craft honest or something you will probably be required to have at nominal amount $1 million in liability insurance.
